Italian artist Anna Utopia Giordano has created a visual re-imagination of historic nude paintings, had the subjects conformed their bodies to what the 21st century considers an ideal of beauty. The results are revealing—and quite shocking in what they say about the modern attitude toward women’s bodies.

Women have to compete three times harder for roles as men do. Only 33% of roles are written for women on US stages. But women comprise 70% of theater ticket buyers and 60% of audiences. What’s up with that?

I don’t read Lynch’s books (though this response makes me want to try them!), but I am still so pleased to read this [admittedly old? I’m late to the boat] response, so different from the usual reaction on the part of an author!
Q: Some of your readers want to know… is the sexual tension between Locke and Jean intended, especially in Red Seas Under Red Skies where it was most noticeable?
SCOTT LYNCH: Hmmmmm. Tricky! Is it intended in the sense that Locke and Jean are supposed to be canonically bisexual…
